Geographical position
Podravje as a region of Slovenia is situated in Central Europe and covers an area of 2.170 km2. It’s international borders are along Austria and Croatia.
Population and language
The Podravje region has approx. 321.000 inhabitants. There is nearly 100% literacy in Podravje (99.6%).A slight declining of the population is the case like in the national level and as in other EU member states. The infant mortality rate is among the lowest in the world (1.8 per 1,000 liveborns). Life expectancy is 78 years for men and 84 for women.
The Slovenian language is a Southern Slavic language spoken by only two million people. In spite of various influences, in particulary Germanic and Italic, it has preserved its special features. The most notable of them is the dual form, nowadays very rare in other languages.

Living in Podravje
The Podravje region is a picturesque, hospitable and nevertheless a safe place with many different landscapes. This way the region represents a land of numerous tourist destinations and an attractive place for sports and recreation fans.
Main attractive features of Podravje are:
- several attractive ski resorts.
- Horseriding paths, interesting destinations for hikers, mountaineers, cyclists, hunters and fishermen, as well as attractive golf courses
- 8 natural spa resorts throughout the region
- lakes and rivers of Podravje’s are seducing with their natural beauty and variety possibilities for water sports
- culture and history of the famous parts of the region can be discovered by visiting castles, churches, museums and galleries. The evening and night life can be spen in cinemas, theatres and casinos. The historic city centres are living with concerts, shows, exhibitions and other outdoor events – especially in the summer season.
- The culinaric specialities are available in the range of national dishes, accompanied by high-quality regional wines.
The foreign languages mostly used by the regional population are English and German.
Public transport and telecommunications are well organized and reliable due to the implementation of the latest technologies. The healthcare system is well developed and, nevertheless, Slovenia is also known as the country with the lowest crime rate in the world.
